How Can Eco Grants Help With Replacing Oil-Fired Boilers?

The problem with oil-fired boilers is that they’re not great for the environment, even less so than a gas boiler. Many of them are old inefficient boilers compared to more modern options, and they also generally cost more to run. There are oil boiler grants out there specifically designed to help you leave your inefficient boiler behind – so there’s plenty of opportunity to make use of an oil boiler replacement grant to improve your heating system at home if you’re interested.

In short, many of you will want to replace them to help save money on your energy bills and improve the energy efficiency of your home. But what if you could replace them for a fraction of the cost, and maybe even for free? With oil-fired boiler replacement grants that might just be possible.

At Eco Grants by ZOA Energy Solutions, we’ve years of experience providing advice and support to individuals hoping to make eco-home improvements, but who might not realise that there are funding options out there that they could take advantage of and enjoy a cheaper or entirely free boiler replacement.

Oil Boiler Upgrade

You can save big on your replacement boiler if you qualify for the right government-backed schemes and grants, and as eco grant experts, we’re best placed to tell you which ones you qualify for – and we only need a small amount of information from you that’ll take 60 seconds to fill in.

Most schemes and grants that apply to oil-fired boiler replacements and upgrades target low-income households, or those living in fuel poverty or in the least energy-efficient homes in the UK. This helps the government move towards their Net Zero target, whilst also ensuring those who need replacement boilers or alternative heating systems are able to enjoy a more comfortable home, lower energy bills, and a reduced carbon footprint for their home.

The following grants are most relevant to those looking to replace their old, inefficient oil fired boilers:

  • ECO4
  • LA Flex
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Why Replace Oil-Fired Boilers Now?

By replacing oil boilers with a new boiler or alternative heating system, you’ll:

  • Have a more energy-efficient boiler
  • Reduce your household’s carbon footprint (some estimates suggest oil-fired boilers are twice as bad in terms of carbon emissions for the environment as combi boilers)
  • Save so much space compared to your old oil boiler
  • Save big on energy bills
  • Get payback on your investment over time with long-term savings

What Are ECO4 Oil Fired Boiler Replacement Grants?

Energy Company Obligation (ECO) aims to support the lowest-income households to improve their energy efficiency, and this can be done in a variety of ways – one of which is by replacing old boilers with A-grade combi boilers that are much more efficient than oil fired boilers.

The ECO Scheme is designed to ensure the big energy companies in the UK are supporting their customers in switching to more energy efficiency measures at home to reduce energy bills and increase comfort. You can replace oil boilers under this scheme because a new boiler will help improve your EPC ratings and reduce the carbon emissions from your home – the ultimate goal of ECO4.

Will ECO4 Cover The Full Cost Of My Oil-Fired Boiler Replacement?

ECO4 could cover the full cost of your oil boiler replacement, but it’s also important to remember that you might only be entitled to partial funding under ECO4 based on your income and requirements, etc.

First, though, you’ll need to ensure you qualify for the funding at all. Check with Eco Grants today, for a quick answer. Or else, read on below.

Who Is Eligible For ECO4?

To qualify for funding you’ll need to be a homeowner or private tenant living in an energy inefficient home with an energy performance certificate rated as D-G. You will also need to be considered a low-income household and meet one of the following criteria:

How Can The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Help Me Get Oil Fired Boiler Replacement Grants?

It’s worth mentioning the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, despite it only being available in England and Wales, because it specifically focuses on providing funding to replace old fossil fuel boilers – such as oil-fired boilers and gas boilers.

Rather than replacing an oil-fired boiler with a combi boiler, though, the boiler upgrade scheme only offers funding for heat pumps (air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps) or biomass boilers.

The scheme had been due to end in 2025, but has been extended to 2028, and offers up to £5,000 towards the cost of installing a biomass boiler (or £7,500 towards a heat pump), so it’s well worth looking into.

Who Is Eligible For The Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

If you’re a homeowner in England or Wales and haven’t already received support through another scheme such as ECO4 and LA Flex, then you might qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, so long as…

  • Your oil-fired boiler is old and inefficient
  • You live in an energy inefficient home
  • You’re considered a low-income household

Oil-Fired Boiler Replacement Grants FAQs:

Currently, no. Most of the grants and schemes around today are focused on moving away from fossil fuel systems in line with the government’s target to reach Net Zero by 2050. Replacing an old oil fired boiler with a new oil boiler goes against this target. A free oil boiler scheme is unlikely to appear in the future for this reason. If you have an old oil fired boiler that needs replacing, you’re much more likely to receive a grant for a new, more modern boiler system with less carbon emissions instead since this benefits both you and the environment!

Yes! ECO4, LA Flex, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme mentioned above care far more about your household income than if you’re on benefits or not. As such, you could still be entitled to support for your oil-fired boiler replacement, even without ever having claimed benefits. Check with Eco Grants today, and we’ll let you know which grants and schemes you qualify for.
